Wenjing Tang first appeared 1,850 years ago in Zhang Zhongjing’s classic formula compendium on complex disorders, Essentials from the Golden Cabinet (Jingui yaolüe). It represents a combination of Danggui Shaoyao San and Maimendong Tang with a distinct slant toward cold constitutions. Due to its relative complexity, this remedy is used only rarely in modern China. In Japan, however, Wenjing Tang is still an extremely popular prescription for a wide array of gynecological problems. Main diagnostic markers are a cold and deficient constitution accompanied by signs of Blood stasis.
