Wuyou San was first mentioned more than 400 years ago in the Ming dynasty revision of an earlier medical textbook, An Expanded Edition of ‘Formulas and Discussions to Amend Omissions in the Neijing’ (Zengbu neijing shiyi fang lun). The formula’s universal reputation as the main remedy for the prevention of difficult childbirth and facilitation of smooth labor, however, originated with the Qing dynasty obstetrician Fu Qingzhu. He featured the formula under the name Baochan Wuyou San (Safeguard Labor and Eliminate Worries Powder) in his quintessential work on female disorders published in 1831, Fu Qingzhu’s Gynecology With Additions (Fu Qingzhu nüke buji). Since then, 19th and 20th century medical scholars have credited Wuyou San with the “saving of tens of thousands of lives”. While in the age of hospital births and surgical interventions this formula has become all but forgotten, Wuyou San can still be considered a prime tool for the facilitation of natural childbirth, especially in the case of first-time mothers who wish to avoid C-section or other emergency procedures.
